Darrin Sharif

Councilman, Central Ward

Darrin was born in 1961 in Newark Beth Israel Hospital.  The first few years of his life were spent at 108 James Street in Newark’s Central Ward. Growing up, he lived in the South Ward’s Weequahic section and later in the West Ward in the Georgia King Village housing complex.  Darrin attended Newark Public Schools and Rutgers University, Newark campus, where he majored in Business Management/Finance, graduating magna cum laude.  Over the last 33 years Darrin has been actively involved with public service and electoral politics.  His introduction to politics came in 1974 at the early age of 13 when he began sweeping the floors of campaign headquarters and handing out flyers for Larrie W. Stalks, the first African American woman elected Essex County Register of Deeds and Mortgages.  Since then, Darrin has had critical roles in campaigns to elect local officials to the Newark Public School Board and the Newark Municipal Council.  Darrin also developed a detailed knowledge of county and municipal government while serving as Deputy Chief of Staff and Confidential Aide to former Essex County Executive, Nicholas A. Amato, and as an Assistant to the Director of Administrative Services for the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.  Darrin’s understanding of the complexities of local government was developed over a two-year period from 1998 to 2000 when he served on the Municipal Council staff.  Darrin’s experience is not limited to the political arena.  He worked as an Accounting Assistant for the Newark Board of Education for 5 years.  Darrin also worked as a Teacher’s Assistant for the Bruce Street School, a school for the hearing impaired, housed in George Washington Carver Elementary School.  For the last 5 years Darrin has been the Director of Operations for the Urban League of Essex County, one of America’s most respected civil rights and social service agencies.  There, he works directly with kids, their parents, and residents who need job training and other assistance.
